Dorper lambs
Dorpers were developed 60 years ago in South Africa as a meat breed by crossing the Horn Dorset which was considered a medium wool breed with good conformation for meat production. and Black headed Persian (a fat tailed desert sheep) because of its hardiness, thriftiness, adaptability, pigmentation, ability to breed every eight months and hair covering.. The modern day Dorper is a fast growing breed. It is the largest breed in South Africa. Recently, the Dorper breed has gained popularity in the Middle East, China, Canada, Australia, South America, Mexico and the United States. The development of the Dorper sheep breed can justly be described as a true South African success story and today stands as a living tribute to those who originated and improved it" In 1950 the South African Dorper Sheep Breeders' Society was formed and White Dorper breeders merged into the association in 1964.
The Dorper have a black head extending in the neck, genitals and feet with white body, .They're an easy care sheep that divert most of their energy into growing meat instead of wool. In fact, you don't have to shear them at all! They are a non selective grazer, browser. Their wide bulky body allows them to thrive by their ability to hold a high volume of marginal feed that most sheep would starve on.
Dorpers have a high lambing rate, the ability to breed all year, outstanding mothering ability, good milkers, hardiness and many other qualities that make them easy to raise. The ewes can produce offspring five times in three years. Twin Dorper lambs are generally between 7 to9 lb at birth, male Dorpers weigh 100 lbs. at 90 days of age and females weigh from 80 to 90 lbs. Dorpers have well developed backs and hind quarters and their meat is lean and tastes delicious. Dorper skins are regarded by many as some of the finest in the world. they have a smooth grain and are used in the manufacture of high quality material.
